Samay Raina's YouTube show India Got Latent has come under fire over Ranveer Allahbadia's inappropriate remarks during his appearance on the show. Amid backlash against the YouTuber and podcast host, another video of panelist Jaspreet Singh has gone viral for racist accent joke on a Keralite contestant.
During a recent episode of the dark comedy show, a contestant from Kerala was asked about her political views by host Samay Raina. When she replied that she doesn't follow politics, panelist Jaspreet Singh made a comment with a fake accent, saying, "Kerala sarr, 100% literacy sarr," perpetuating a racist stereotype about the state's high literacy rate. Jaspreet's remarks evoked a loud laughter from fellow panelists Samaya, Apoorva Mukhija, and Ranveer Allahbadia, but have now attracted backlash from netizens.
The clip was shared on the Reddit subreddit r/InstaCelebsGossip, where Instagram influencers and YouTubers are discussed, and has now come under fire, with Redditors lashing out at Samaya Raina's show for alleged racism.
One user wrote, "What is concerning is this is so normalized that not a single person objected to it. Not a single person in Kerala speaks like this, and this is nothing but a stereotyped South Indian accent. You may not have to agree with a person or a region's political allegiance, but what the fuck is this?
Another commented, "This "joke" is not even funny anymore because it's being used in almost every comment section of reels about South India."
A third Redditor highlighted that one girl doesn't represent the entire state, adding, "Kerala has the 4th highest voter turnout among large states in the 2024 general elections and the 14th highest among all states and UTs. The 71.57% voter turnout in Kerala is higher than the national average of 65.79%. Maharashtra, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh have 63.69, 59.3, and 56.25, respectively."
The Redditor added, 'That guy had an unfunny, stereotypical "joke" about Kerala that he just had to use somewhere while his state might have had a voter turnout and literacy rate less than the national average."
One user reasoned, "Literacy rate is defined by primary school education, something which is terribly deficient in most states across India. Literacy rate is not political knowledge."
Another shared, "The problem is most of the Indians don't even know the actual meaning of literacy and then try to make a joke out of it. In India, a citizen is considered literate if he/she can read, write, and speak in any language by the age of 7. Kerala holds the highest literacy rate and Bihar the lowest. And there is a thin line difference between being literate and being educated. Once we Indians understand the difference, I hope we will stop making jokes out of it. P.S. I'm not a Keralite. Just stating the facts."
"The childish humor of this shit show and of our country in general never fails to amaze me. The lack of depth of character and non-existent critical thinking skills tells you more about a person than anything else. Imagine making fun of someone's accent? I thank God every day I don't have to live in India and witness this nonsense.
Aside from this Saar nonsense these juveniles find funny, none of these people will want to even discuss the shortcomings of the states they come from. I'm guessing because there's nothing to be proud of?" commented one person.
