Every day we hear of different people taking a stand against Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Now, Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov said he wants to auction off his 2021 Nobel Peace Prize medal to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees.?
Muratov edits the independent Novaya Gazeta newspaper, and called for people to?¡°share with refugees, the wounded and children who need urgent treatment what is dear to you and has a value for others.¡±?
According to a report by AFP, the Russian journalist is asking auction houses about the possibility of organising a sale. Last year, Muratov said that he was giving away his share of the Nobel prize money to causes including independent media, a Moscow hospice, and care for children with spinal problems. He expressed his wish to not keep any of it for himself.?
The 2021 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to journalists Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression. The Nobel committee praised Ressa and Muratov for ¡°their courageous fight for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia."
The prize was the first for journalists since German Carl von Ossietzky won it in 1935 for revealing his country¡¯s secret post-war rearmament programme.??
Muratov founded the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta in 1993 and has been its editor-in-chief for 24 years. It is today one of the very few independent media outlets in Russia.
Muratov has faced attempts by the Russian government to silence his publication.
