US Teen Pronounced Dead, Comes Back To Life After 2 Hours Of CPR In 'Literal Miracle'

After being pronounced clinically dead, a Texas teenager named Sammy Berko shocked doctors when he regained vital signs moments later.?

Sammy had undergone cardiac arrest while rock climbing at a local gym in Missouri City and was brought to the hospital in critical condition on January 7th.

Despite tireless efforts from gym staff, first responders, and hospital doctors performing CPR for two hours, the medical team delivered the tragic news to Sammy's family that he had passed away.

However, just five minutes after saying goodbye to their son, Sammy's family noticed he was moving.?

The medical staff was shocked to find that he had returned to life.

"They looked at us and said, 'I'm so sorry, but he's gone,'" Jennifer Berko, Sammy's mother, told KRIV about her son.

Ms. Berko shared how she summoned all her strength to bid farewell to her son. However, after five minutes, her husband noticed Sammy moving, and the family rushed to get help from the medical staff.?

The medical team was stunned to see the teen was alive.

"Every one of them afterward came to us and said they had never seen anything like this. Ever. Never had they ever pronounced somebody, and suddenly they came back five minutes later,"?Ms. Jenko said.?

"That feeling of seeing his heartbeat, there are no words for that. There are no words. We just stood there. Grateful is the biggest understatement to know that he might make it."

Although Sammy's brain had gone without oxygen for at least five minutes, he only experienced short-term memory loss and is now recovering from an ischemic spine injury sustained during the incident.

Sammy's doctor called him a "literal miracle," considering that severe global anoxic brain injury is typically seen in cases where CPR has been performed for a prolonged period.?

Sammy attributed his cardiac arrest to a rare genetic condition known as catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, which had already claimed his younger brother's life in 2020.

Sammy and his mother have tested positive for the genetic mutation and are now receiving treatment. Despite the experience being "crazy," Sammy is focusing on his physical health and pursuing his passion for playing the drums and keyboard.?

As per the latest updates on the Caring Bridge website, Sammy is expected to be released shortly to commence his outpatient therapy.
