Chandrayaan 2, the star of India's ambitious space mission to land a rover on the moon, is scheduled for take-off on July 15, 2019 from ISRO¡¯s Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 2.51am IST.?
This surely will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and if you are fascinated with everything related to space, this is the moment you've been waiting for!
ISRO announced the decision on Wednesday ahead of India's second mission to the moon.?
In April, ISRO inaugurated a viewing gallery, an amphitheatre of sorts, at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, from where nearly 5,000 registered guests watched the PSLV-C45 take off.?
The launch viewing gallery is capable of accommodating 5,000 visitors and the admission will be on a first come, first served basis, reports?cntraveller.in.?
The state-of-the-art viewing gallery is equipped with large screens and has a running commentary to explain the intricacies of the rocket launch, pre- and post-launch content.
The gallery will also have food and beverage services and other facilities for an unforgettable viewing experience.?The gallery for the public will be set at least five kilometres away from the launch site.?
The lander has been named Vikram while the rover is called Pragyan. Rover Pragyan will be housed inside lander Vikram and will be deployed after Vikram lands on the lunar surface.
The orbiter is scheduled to orbit the moon while on the mission and then perform a soft landing at a site close to the lunar South Pole.
"After launch into earthbound orbit by GSLV MK-III, the integrated module will reach lunar orbit using its Orbiter propulsion module. Subsequently, the Lander will separate from the Orbiter and land softly at the predetermined site, close to the lunar South Pole. Furthermore, the Rover will carry out scientific experiments on the lunar surface," the ISRO statement reads.?
This is the second time in 10 years that India is planning to send a lunar mission into space. Chandrayaan 2 comes 10 years after ISRO launched Chandrayaan 1 in 2009.
