A viral video circulating on social media shows a judge at the Karnataka High Court expressing frustration over a woman's hefty maintenance demand of over Rs 6 lakh from her ex-husband, made through her lawyer. The judge questions the legitimacy of such a large monthly amount, a stance that has earned widespread praise from netizens. Many have lauded her for raising the right questions and delivering fair judgments, further highlighting the crucial role female judges play in bringing justice.
Check out the video here:
The woman's total maintenance request of Rs 6,16,300 per month includes expenses such as Rs 4-5 lakh for knee pain treatment and physiotherapy, Rs 15,000 for shoes and dresses, Rs 60,000 for home food, and several thousand more for dining out.?
Her lawyer emphasised that her ex-husband's preference for wearing branded clothes is a key reason behind the high maintenance request. He pointed out that while the ex-husband wears expensive brands, like Rs 10,000 Calvin Klein t-shirts, she has to make do with old dresses.??
The judge was scathing in her response.
She stated, ¡°Please don¡¯t tell the court that this is all a person requires.¡±
"If she wishes to spend such a sum, she should earn it herself rather than burdening her husband. Does anybody spend this much, a single lady for herself? So if she wants to spend, let her earn. Not on the husband,¡± she said.
The judge also highlighted that the ex-husband already provides for their children, meaning the entire requested amount is solely for the woman.?
¡°You have no other responsibility of the family. You don¡¯t have to take care of the children,¡± she pointed out.
Further criticising the excessive demand, the judge remarked that alimony should not serve as a punishment for the husband: ¡°That¡¯s not the purpose of Section 24 and it is not a punishment to the husband that he is having disputes with wife to grant Rs 6,16,000. You should be reasonable in telling it, not that I will tell some figure and the court will give some amount or the other.¡±
Angry at the situation, she added, ¡°We want to send a loud and clear message to all the litgants who want to exploit the process of the court, this is an exploitation.¡±
The video, which quickly went viral with nearly 2 million views in under 24 hours, saw many people emphasising that the judge's response was the need of the hour.
The judge received widespread praise from people:
Others pointed out how this is a disrespect of the court itself:
