In the aftermath of the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, the atmosphere around the upcoming Indo-Pak film Abir Gulaal has taken a serious turn. The film, starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Indian actor Vaani Kapoor, has become the centre of a growing controversy.
Following the attack that killed at least 26 people, social media has been flooded with criticism regarding the timing and nature of the film¡¯s release, particularly highlighting the collaboration between Indian and Pakistani talent. As public sentiment grows more intense, calls for a boycott of Abir Gulaal have gained significant traction.
Adding to the controversy, two of the film¡¯s songs¡ªKhudaya Ishq, a romantic ballad, and Angreji Rangrasiya, an upbeat dance number¡ªhave been quietly removed from YouTube India. They are no longer accessible on the official channel of the film¡¯s production house, A Richer Lens Entertainment, or on music label Saregama¡¯s YouTube channel, despite the latter holding the official rights to the soundtrack.
A third track titled Tain Tain was expected to release this week but has not yet been launched. No formal statement has been issued by the film¡¯s makers or cast regarding the removal of the songs or the delay of new releases.
Earlier this week, Fawad Khan expressed his condolences on social media, stating that he was deeply saddened by the Pahalgam incident and offered prayers for the victims and their families. However, no further comments have followed from any involved parties.
Meanwhile, the future of Abir Gulaal in Indian cinemas appears uncertain. According to a PTI report, government sources have indicated that the film will not be allowed to release in India in light of the ongoing tensions. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) also reiterated its long-standing directive to restrict any collaboration with Pakistani artists across the Indian entertainment industry.
Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Lisa Haydon, Riddhi Dogra, Farida Jalal, Soni Razdan, and Parmeet Sethi. While the project was envisioned as a cross-cultural cinematic venture, the unfolding situation has raised significant questions about the feasibility of such collaborations in the current climate.
As of now, Abir Gulaal is still officially scheduled to release on May 9, but with no music promotions and mounting opposition, its future remains unclear.
