In a shocking incident, a Tesla Cybertruck packed with fireworks and a gas canister exploded on the 1st of January, 2025, outside President-elect Donald Trump's Las Vegas hotel, killing one person and injuring seven others, which became a matter of concern. Officials following up on the incident recently found out that the explosion was conducted by a highly decorated soldier, who used generative artificial intelligence (AI), including ChatGPT, to plan out the attack, reported AP.
Reacting to the attack, Tesla owner Elon Musk said that it appeared to be an act of terrorism and the attacker ¡®picked up the wrong vehicle.¡¯?
According to the AP report, a laptop, mobile phone, and a watch found at the crime scene are under review, nearly a week after 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger shot himself dead just before the truck blew up.?
After reviewing Livelsberger's searches through ChatGPT, he indicated that he was looking for information on explosive targets, the speed at which certain rounds of ammunition would travel, and whether fireworks were legal in Arizona.?
Kevin McMahill, sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, noted that the use of generative AI is a "game changer" and said the department was sharing information with other law enforcement agencies.?
Sharing his concern regarding the incident, McMahill noted that this is the first incident of such kind in the US where ChatGPT is used to help an individual build a particular device.?
The law enforcement also disclosed that during the drive to Las Vegas to pour racing-grade fuel into the Cybertruck, they then dripped the substance.
The vehicle was also carrying 60 pounds (around 27 kilograms) of pyrotechnic material; however, officials are still not sure what exactly led to the explosion. But according to them, it could have been the flash from the firearm that Livelsberger used to shoot himself.?
Livelsberger was an Army Green Beret who was deployed twice to Afghanistan. He also lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and left notes saying that the explosion was a stunt that was meant to be a 'wake-up call' for the nation's problems.?
He also left his cell phone, and the notes in it mentioned that he needed to ¡°cleanse¡± his mind ¡°of the brothers I¡¯ve lost and relieve myself of the burden of the lives I took."
