K-drama enthusiasts are floored by the new MBC show When the Phone Rings starring Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin. Just four episodes in, fans have dubbed the romance thriller "Wattpad-coded," suggesting that the male lead, played by Yoo, perfectly embodies the archetype of a fanfiction hero, bringing to life the fantasies of many fans. However, amid the massive buzz, the K-drama has landed in a new controversy.
When the Phone Rings has garnered criticism for Hong Hee Joo's portrayal of a sign language journalist. A scene allegedly mocking sign language has now sparked backlash, leaving a distasteful note despite the critical acclaim. Following the online scrutiny, the production team issued an apology stating, "We deeply regret causing concern with certain sign language scenes."
The K-drama features Chae Soo Bin as Hong Hee Joo, a sign language interpreter for a news channel, while Yoo Yeon Seok stars as Baek Sa Eon, a spokesperson for the President's office. In the premiere episode, a technical glitch causes the broadcast to freeze on Hee Joo's sign for "mountain", which is unfortunately misinterpreted as an obscene hand gesture. This has caused a backlash on social media, with many calling out the series for mocking sign language.
The production team has issued a statement apologising for the alleged inappropriate portrayal of Korean sign language. The team stated that they had no intention of mocking or belittling sign language, which is a precious communication tool for deaf people.
"In ※When the Phone Rings,§ sign language is an important subject that plays a crucial role in getting the two main characters to finally open their long-closed hearts and communicate with one another," the statement added. "We ask that you continue to watch our drama with interest and criticize us if something is lacking."
The K-drama When the Phone Rings is based on the webtoon The Number You Have Dialed by Geon Eomul Nyeo. The story revolves around the complex relationship between Baek Sa Eon and Hong Hee Jo, who enter into a contract marriage due to their family's pressure. Despite three years of being married, Baek safeguards his wife's identity due to the high risks involved in his profession. However, their lives turn upside down after a mysterious call from a kidnapper, setting off a chain of unprecedented events.
International viewers can catch the MBC drama on Netflix every Friday and Saturday. However, the release schedule will be adjusted for two weeks in December, with only one episode airing on December 13 and another on December 21.
