WrestleMania 41: Expert calls the finish of John Cena-Cody Rhodes’ match ‘horrible’, reveals how he would have booked it

John Cena beat Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 41 to capture the Undisputed Championship. The match proved to be watchable. However, its ending left fans disappointed. Cena got the win after nailing ‘QB1’ with the belt and a vicious low blow. Travis Scott too, got involved, which did not go down too well with the WWE Universe.?

Writer Vince Russo, who was once associated with WCW and WWE, has now ripped apart the finish on the much-hyped match. He called it ‘horrible’ and explained what went wrong.

Vince Russo, who has been associated with the professional wrestling industry since the 90s,? is widely credited for revolutionising the business with edgy storytelling. He was a part of the WWE’s creative team during the ‘Attitude Era’, which saw the company scale new heights. In an interview with Indiatimes, the veteran booker said that The Rock’s decision to skip WrestleMania 41 resulted in John Cena and Cody Rhodes’ match ending on a ‘horrible’ note.?

“The finish was horrible. Maybe the worst I have seen in my years of watching the product. They set it up in such a way that everyone thought they were getting The Rock and then we got Travis Scott,” he said.?

Russo went on to reveal how he would have booked the feud without involving The Rock.?

“I would have had Cena win the Elimination Chamber match (which he did) and then have him as a babyface putting over Dusty Rhodes (Cody’s father) during the feud. I would have had? Cena turning heel at WrestleMania during the match,” said the writer.

He further stated that he would not have involved The Rock at all had he known that ‘The Great One’ wasn’t going to appear at WrestleMania 41.?

Ahead of the Elimination Chamber event, The Rock asked Cody Rhodes to be a ‘corporate champion’. Cena, meanwhile, decided to enter the marquee match for the last time in his career. At the show, Cena emerged victorious and shared the ring with The Rock and Cody Rhodes during their segment. ‘QB1’ rejected The Final Boss’ offer. Following this, Cena attacked his WrestleMania 41 opponent on The Rock’s orders and turned heel for the first time in over two decades. He then went on to beat Cody at WrestleMania to win his 17th world title and break Ric Flair’s record.?
