In an extraordinary announcement, a hospital revealed that a 70-year-old woman has welcomed twins after undergoing IVF treatment.
Safina Namukwaya earned the distinction of being Africa's oldest person to give birth after she welcomed her two babies into the world.
On Wednesday afternoon, according to reports, Safina delivered a baby girl and a baby boy via a caesarean section. Doctors have hailed the pregnancy as a ¡°medical success,¡± emphasising that Safina and her two little ones are in good health.
The mother has certainly had a remarkable journey over the past nine months, compounded by her forty-year-long struggle with fertility before finally conceiving.
Safina underwent surgery to give birth to twins at Women's Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala,?Uganda.
In 2020, she experienced the joy of giving birth for the first time and welcomed her baby girl, Sarah. Safina shared that she had encountered bullying and social stigma in her community due to her inability to have children prior to this moment.
She said at the time, ¡°Many people judged and abused me for being barren, but I decided to leave everything to the Almighty God, who has finally answered my prayers.¡±
After the successful birth of her first daughter, Safina underwent additional IVF treatment to bring her twins into the world. However, this particular pregnancy didn't proceed as smoothly as her previous one.
Over the past nine months, the mother of three has faced various challenges, including health complications and personal struggles.
While Safina has made history in Africa, she isn't the oldest woman worldwide to give birth. Erramatti Mangayamma, who underwent IVF treatment in India, gave birth to twin girls in 2019 at the age of 74.
