A blood-red sea creature resembling something out of a horror film terrified whale watchers in California. The unusual discovery was found in Monterey and went viral after being shared on Instagram.?
The whale watchers described the monster as being "right out of the Twilight Zone." "We found it just hanging out on our dock this morning, and we gently scooped it up with some cardboard before carefully putting it back in the water," one of the whale watchers told the New York Post.
The organism has been identified as a blood worm, and its body is coated in rows of hair-like appendages that resemble something out of a horror video game. The term "blood worm" refers to an invertebrate that burrows and has translucent skin that shows red body secretions.?
These worms may grow up to a foot long and have a venomous proboscis with fangs that can trap victims, much like the alien in the "Alien" film series. Despite its scary appearance, the bloodworm does not assault humans.
However, experts warn against touching its mouth since it might administer a stinging bite.
The experience left many on the internet uneasy, with others sarcastically comparing the creature to sections of the human digestive system or labelling it a "nope rope."?
Despite its frightening appearance, the blood worm is simply one of the ocean's interesting inhabitants.?
