Gurugram techie outwits scammer by offering to redesign his fake website for Rs 20,000

By now we're all too aware of the number of unsuspecting victims scammers have claimed. Whether it's on your phone or computer, they seem to weasel their way into any device we're connecting to. No less than pests, these scammers dissolve into thin air without a trace once they've made the money they set out to loot.?

But what this has also given rise to is a trend of smart people who are pushing back and how. Mind you, here there are no victims. Only scammers getting a taste of their own bitter medicine. Take the following story for example. A techie from Gurugram recently turned the tables on a scammer who reached out to him on WhatsApp--a breeding ground for this menace--and offered to help him redesign his fake website. Did the scammer buy it though? Read on to find out.

Had the scammer known he was trying to take a cyber security analyst down, he would've had second thoughts. Luckily for?Gaurav Sharan, he taught the pest an interesting lesson. The scammer pretending to be a representative from HDFC tried to get Gaurav to update his PAN details on a fake link. Not missing a beat, Gaurav told him, "Easy to find it is a scamming website. I am a software engineer, I can help you redesign the page. For 20K, I will help you redesign exactly like the HDFC net banking site." The scammer took the bait and asked that he share a sample of his work.?

While this is where the conversation ended, it was refreshing to see these cyber thieves get a taste of their own medicines.?"Lesson: Never mess with a developer," he captioned his post on X sharing screenshots of his conversation with the scammer.?

The post shared by Sharan on July 28, raked in 87.6k views and comments to match. "Why did you censor the phone number? Protecting the privacy of a scammer?" wondered one user. "Take the 20k and disappear," joked another. "Bro's business is to scam the scammers," a third chimed in. "Sahi khel gaye guru," a fourth was happy to write.
