Researchers Alexandra Maftei and Acnana-Maria Patrausanu at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iasi, Romania, dug into the matter and came up with some surprising results.
What Did They Find Out?
The researchers observed a correlation wherein people scoring higher on the scale measuring narcissistic traits were more prone to experiencing considerable levels of nomophobia.
What is nomophobia, you ask? According to the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, cellphone addiction, termed "nomophobia" or "no mobile phone phobia," refers to the fear of being disconnected from mobile phone connectivity.
Additionally, the study found that narcissists tend to seek and rely on feeling significant through admiration from others, a need that can be readily fulfilled through likes and comments obtained from engagement on social media platforms.
Who Is A Narcissist?
The narcissist ¡°encompasses a hunger for appreciation or admiration, a desire to be the center of attention, and an expectation of special treatment reflecting perceived higher status,¡± as per Psychology Today.
Yet, there exists a distinction between narcissistic personality disorder and the general trait of narcissism. The findings of the study, detailed in the Journal of Psychology, explained how nomophobia, narcissism, stress, and addiction to social media collectively influence an individual's behaviour.
How Was The Study Conducted?
The research involved assessing 559 individuals aged between 18 and 45. They were tasked with completing an online survey encompassing tests that measured narcissism, stress, symptoms related to social media addiction, and nomophobia.
The evaluation included queries like "I would feel uncomfortable without constant access to information through my smartphone¡± and ¡°How often during the last year have you used social media so much that it has had a negative impact on your job/studies?"
