Rainbows are a rarity. And if you remember the Science lesson from school, you might recall that the rainbow is a phenomenon that occurs due to refraction, reflection and dispersion of light.
They usually can be seen if there is sunlight right after a rainshower, and it appears in the direction opposite to that of the sun.
A rainbow is made of seven colours?that are visible to the naked eye, VIBGYOR (Violet, Indigo, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red). But have you heard of a rainbow which is completely pink??
England recently shared its excitement with the world when a pink rainbow graced its skies.?
You might have witnessed the sky turning pink during a sunset, but that's not unusual. In fact, the sky at times turns different?shades of red and orange because of the way sunlight refracts in the atmosphere.
When the sun is low in the sky, it has to cut through a thick slice of atmosphere. At these time shorter wavelengths of light like the blues, greens and the violets get scattered making the reds and oranges visible to naked eye.?
?
The light in the atmosphere is also scattered by water droplets, that is why we see rainbows.?
What happened in England was this: there was absence of white light as the sky was flooded with pink light, when it passed through the water drops in the air. Instead of forming a full spectrum, the rainbow that formed was made of red, orange and pink hues.?
This rare phenomenon was spotted a couple of days ago in London and people took to the internet to express their awe and wonder after witnessing this.?
But this is not the first time this phenomenon has occurred in England. Two years ago, in August 2017 Bristol, Weston-Super-Mare and Taunton witnessed the same phenomenon. The sky was filled with the red and pink lights and a pink rainbow was quite clearly visible.??
Nature can be pleasantly surprising at times. There is no scientific term for ¡®pink rainbow¡¯. There are other quite rare natural phenomenona that you might not know of.?
Fogbows are white rainbows and are formed because of fog instead of rain.?

Lightening balls: only 5 per cent of the earth¡¯s population has ever witnessed this phenomenon. It is a ball of lightning and it lasts for more time in the sky than the usual lightning strike.?
