Survival of the fittest is not just a statement but the law of nature. Predators hunting prey or eating them alive are a common affair but this particular video of a seagull gulping down a rabbit whole while it was alive might just shock you.?
In fact, the footage shows the exact moment a seagull plucked a live rabbit from a warren and swallowed it whole. The video has gone viral.
The incident was captured on camera on the remote Skomer Island off the Pembrokeshire coast. The Great Black-backed Gull can be seen gulping down the rabbit whole.
For some moments, according to Daily Mail the island¡¯s wildlife team thought that the seagull might have more on its plate than it could slow but after a short pause the seagull downed the entire rabbit and it was as good as gone.?
According to Daily Mail, the team at Skomer Island, managed by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, says that rabbits are an important part of seagull¡¯s diet.
"Rabbits are an important part of their diet when none or very few small seabirds or seabird chicks are available,¡± they were quoted as saying.?
29-year old? Nathan Wilkie and Sylwia Zbijewska live on the remote island and are surrounded by other creatures like seals, puffins and shearwaters as well.??
The island houses thousands of puffins that outnumber people by 4,400 to one.?It is also the world's largest colony of Manx shearwater - with more than 300,000 pairs.
Coronavirus fears did not spare this remote island either. ¡°I'm sort of showing potential symptoms and it's difficult to know if it is coronavirus or not. In theory, we come in contact with very few people, but because myself and Sylwia share accommodation, we're both in quarantine basically," Nathan reportedly said.?
The two have been working on the island since 2018 for The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales. The only neighbours they have are the new island recruits who arrived to help out on the nature reserve.
Coming back to seagull swallowing the rabbit, it is an unusual sight because the predator is not large. An average sized seagull swallowing a rabbit is not something you come across everyday.?
