A restaurant manager won a payment of more than Rs 36 lakh after her supervisor told her "You will be terminated" after she announced she was pregnant. Here's the full story.?
An employment tribunal heard that Paulina Bawej, 32, was told by her manager that she needed to take a Rs 4 lakh wage cut before getting threatening messages and being sacked. Bawej, who represented herself, was granted Rs 36 lakh in damages after suing for pregnancy discrimination and wrongful dismissal.
Huangs Grill, the firm that hired her, owns the Japanese restaurants Sushinoen in Whitechapel, east London, and Taisho in Golders Green, north London. Bawej was hired as an assistant manager in July 2018, according to the tribunal.?
Bawej informed her boss that she was having a child shortly after discovering she was pregnant in February 2019.Mr Huang, on the other hand, was allegedly "shocked" by the news and stated that he wanted to consult with co-manager Kim.
The pregnant 32-year-old was subsequently compelled to shift from Taisho to the Sushinoen eatery. Bawej requested that her time be split between the two eateries, but Ms Kim "abruptly refused."?
The restaurant manager then requested that Bawej's pay be reduced by ?4,000 per year.?
When Bawej highlighted the issue of pregnancy rights, Kim texted her, "This has nothing to do with pregnancy." I'm referring to your position. Remember not to forget. Shang attempted to give you a chance.?
"You will be fired from Taisho and hired at Sushinoen. It was not transmitted. I hired you for Taisho, not Sushinoen. We already have an assistant manager, so I don't need it, and your salary is above average."?
"As a result, I cannot afford it. It is all up to you. If you want to attend, that's OK; if not, that's fine, too."?
Bawej, who has a three-year-old daughter named Mali, claimed she was "devastated" by the event and has since given up her work in hospitality.?
