Things can take surprising turns at the most unlikely of times. A ¡°super fertile¡± woman remarkably got pregnant twice within just 28 days and even gave birth to the children on the same day.?
Sophie Small did not realise that she had actually conceived twice in a month's time, even after she gave birth to daughters she had thought were twin sisters.?The 30-year-old gave birth to Holly and Darcy in August 2020. The mother initially believed that the two girls who were born on the same day were twins, like every other mom who gives birth to two babies at once.
However, after she had given birth to her two little daughters, the midwives were shockingly alarmed by the difference in size between the infants. While Darcy tipped the scales at 4 pounds, 2 ounces, Holly, who came second into this world, weighed much heavier than Darcy at 6 pounds, 1 ounce.
Later, doctors concluded, after pondering what could have happened to the two children for them to be so different in size, that the babies were conceived about a month apart due to superfetation. For those wondering what superfetation is, it is simply a phenomenon where a second pregnancy occurs shortly after the first one.
As per the Cleveland Clinic, "superfetation is so rare in humans that there are only about 10 confirmed cases. They¡¯re so unique that when they happen, they often make headlines," the clinic¡¯s info page states. "The chance that you¡¯ll be affected by superfetation is close to zero."
The clinic further claims that a pregnant woman¡¯s body undergoes "hormonal changes that make it nearly impossible to become pregnant while a fertilised egg (embryo) is already growing inside the uterus.
Sophie, one of the only women who have experienced such a phenomenon, told Kennedy News that her pregnancy was "horrific." The mom shared, "I was carrying two babies who were growing at different stages, but we didn¡¯t know that. They couldn¡¯t figure out why I was so sick. I was expecting twins, but one was bigger than the other."
She explained, "They had their own sacs and placentas, so they could feed when they wanted to. She added, "But they [doctors] couldn¡¯t work out why one twin was bigger than the other."
It was only after the girls were born that the significance of their size difference prompted doctors to run tests and come to the conclusion that it was a superfetation.
