Doctors at a hospital in the US' Ohio transplanted a kidney into the wrong person, and because of that, the intended recipient is still waiting for the life-saving surgery.?
Cleveland¡¯s University Hospitals have apologized for the medical mess and two employees involved in the shocking mix-up have been placed on administrative leave, New York Post reported.?
The person who received?the kidney is expected to recover since the organ happened to be compatible, but the other patient¡¯s transplant has been delayed because of the error.
¡°We have offered our sincerest apologies to these patients and their families,¡± hospital spokesman George Stamatis said in a statement.
¡°We recognize they entrusted us with their care. ¡°The situation is entirely inconsistent with our commitment to helping patients return to health and live life to the fullest," he said.?
Officials have informed the United Network for Organ Sharing, which oversees transplants in the US, and is reviewing the incident ¡°to understand what led to the error and to ensure that such an event will never happen again,¡± the statement said.
Earlier in May,? doctors at an Austrian hospital amputated the wrong leg of an elderly man, in what was described as a "tragic mistake".
The 82-year-old patient was supposed to have his left leg removed, but doctors instead amputated his right leg above the knee, which the hospital, the Freistadt Clinic in northern Austria,?blamed on "human error."??
The hospital had said that the error appeared to have been made before the operation when a worker incorrectly marked his right leg as one to operate on.? ?
