BLACKPINK's Lisa has released her long awaited solo album Alter Ego on February 28. While her fans are enjoying the songs released, the rapper has found herself at the center of a heated debate following the release of her new track FUTW and the lyrics of the song.
"Rappin¡¯ like my lease up, I told ¡®em that I¡¯m focused?
They want the old LISA, then listen to my old shit?
Rap it like a deep cut, flowin¡¯ like the ocean?
They want the old LISA, then listen to my old shit."
While some fans praised Lisa's bold and confident bars, others criticized the "old Lisa" line, interpreting it as dismissive towards fans longing for her earlier style.
A few netizens took issue with the lyrics, claiming Lisa hardly has any songs to compare "old Lisa" to her new version. For those who do not know, she had two solo songs, MONEY and LALISA before she went her own way for her solo endeavors leaving YG Entertainment.
One wrote, "As a local who knew abt Lisa thx to money, I can say that it is ridiculous that she wrote this knowing that old lisa doesn¡¯t exists cuz she continues to do the same as that lisa, just look at the lyrics, rhythms etc, she is an old Lisa 2.0 cuz there is no change"
Another said, "'old shit' and the whole time she only got like 2 songs. CORNY"
However, Lillies ¡ª Lisa's loyal fanbase ¡ª were quick to defend her. Many pointed out that the lyrics mirror a common sentiment among artists: growth and evolution are part of their journey. They argued that this shows how YG did not allow Lisa to grow as an artist and this new era is going to be different.
One wrote, "qts being a smartass... that's EXACTLY the point. u miss the old lisa? go listen to the bare minimum yg gave her before she freed herself from that hellhole and made a good record with over 10 tracks while doing multiple BIG gigs".
Lisa's debut solo studio album was released through her agency Lloud and RCA Records. The 15-track album features collaborations with Doja Cat, Raye, Rosal¨ªa, Future, Megan Thee Stallion, and Tyla. It also has her four singles: Rockstar, New Woman, Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me), and Born Again.?
