El Salvador refuses to return U.S. man wrongfully deported by Trump
Kilmar ?brego Garc¨ªa, a 29-year-old Salvadoran, was mistakenly deported by the Trump administration to a notorious mega-prison in El Salvador, known for its grave human rights violations. Despite a 2019 court ruling granting him protection from deportation due to risks of persecution by local gangs, Garc¨ªa was sent back in what the administration later admitted was an ¡®administrative error.¡¯
El Salvador¡¯s President Nayib Bukele has refused to return Garc¨ªa to the U.S., calling the idea ¡°preposterous¡± and likening it to smuggling a terrorist. While the Trump administration claims Garc¨ªa has ties to the MS-13 gang, he has no criminal record in either the U.S. or El Salvador. The case has sparked outrage, with Garc¨ªa¡¯s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, accusing both governments of playing political games with his life.
