After scripting history last year through the success of Chandrayaan-3, ISRO is already preparing for its next big mission-Gaganyaan.?All eyes will be on this mission this year, as ISRO chief Somnath has already declared 2024 as the ¡®year for Gaganyaan¡¯. But what is the mission all about? And what is its cost???
With an expected launch in 2024 and a total mission cost of Rs 9,023 crore, the Gaganyaan Programme aims to demonstrate human spaceflight to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in the short term. And in the long run, it will set the groundwork for an ongoing Indian space exploration program. The Gaganyaan program aims to show that India is capable of carrying out human space flight missions to low Earth orbit.
As per ISRO, the Government of India has approved two unmanned and one manned missions as part of this program.

4.Indian Meteorological Department
5.CSIR Labs
6.Academic institutes
7.Industry partners
As per ISRO, the human spaceflight programme under Gaganyaan has the following benefits for India:
1.Progress towards a sustained and affordable human and robotic programme to explore the solar system and beyond.
2.Advanced technology capability for undertaking human space exploration, sample return missions and scientific exploration.
3.Future capability to actively collaborate in global space station development & to carry out scientific experiments of interest to the nation.
4.Create a broad frame work for wider Academia ¨C Industry partnership in taking up development activities for national development.
5.Ample scope for employment generation and human resource development in advanced science and R&D activities.
6.Unique opportunity to inspire and excite Indian youth and steer many students toward careers in science and technology towards challenging jobs that encourage knowledge, innovation and creativity.
7.The programme will strengthen international partnerships and global security through the sharing of challenging and peaceful goals. Having a vibrant human spaceflight programme can be leveraged as a potent foreign policy tool.
On the other hand, the uncrewed missions are aimed for technology demonstration, safety and reliability verification and will be heavily instrumented to study the performance of systems before crewed flight.
In October 2023, ISRO scientists had launched the rocket carrying payloads related to crew safety in Gaganyaan mission with precision from Sriharikota and achieved the goal of Crew Module and Crew Escape separation. ISRO chief S. Somanath said, Gaganyaan¡¯s first Flight Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1 (TV-D1) was successfully accomplished.?
