Ever since it premiered in September 2021, the South Korean series Squid Game on Netflix has been nothing short of a sensation all around the world.? The series is undoubtedly intriguing and equally imbued with suspense and anxiety. While you absorb the roller coaster of emotions after watching the series, why not also grab some of financial lessons which the series teaches to all of us:
Squid Game is a great reminder to everyone that rich quick schemes do not exist, and there are no shortcuts to wealth creation. Most contestants in the series indulged into gambling with the idea to get rich quickly with minimal or no efforts. Always remember, gambling is detrimental to your lives in not one but multiple ways- be it financial losses, accumulated debt and at worst, pushing you to commit theft or fraud to support this addiction. So just? stay away!
Remember the scene where Seong Gi-hun¡¯s mother was sick with diabetes, and despite the doctor¡¯s suggestion of staging back in the hospital for better healthcare, she had to leave the hospital because Gi-hun had already cancelled the insurance to pay for his extravagant spending habits. All this boils down to the lesson that health insurance is not an option but in fact a necessity to financially protect yourself and your loved ones when tackling high medical bills. Because the only thing that remains afterwards is regret, just like Gi-hin¡¯s case, whose mother eventually died in the show.
Many characters in Squid Game lived in denial about the mess which their financial lives were in. Just like them, most people don¡¯t share their financial hardships before it¡¯s too late. Yes we agree that asking for help might feel difficult, but if that's the best way to prevent yourself from going the desperate way of committing crimes like robbery or doing gambling, then why not? As simple as it sounds, just ask for financial support from your friends or family and once you are back on your feet, repay them. After all, our choices determine our future!
A scene in Squid Game shows a contestant stealing his mother¡¯s ATM card and guessing the PIN as his own daughter¡¯s date of birth, which turns out to be correct! So what does this teach us? It¡¯s a reminder that not only should you avoid trusting anyone, especially when it comes to money matters, but also set hard and unique passwords and PINs for all accounts and cards, guessing which will leave the potential thief scratching their heads forever.
