One of the world¡¯s richest billionaires and veteran investor Warren Buffett is set to hold his million-dollar annual lunch event for the one last time this year. Buffett, who had begun auctioning off annual charity lunches in the year 2000, will do so for the one last time in June 2022.
Warren Buffett plans to hold his 21st, and final, charity lunch to raise money for Glide, a San Francisco nonprofit that serves the poor, homeless, and people battling substance abuse, as per a report in Reuters.
The nonprofit organization Glide said on Monday that the auction begins on June 12 on eBay and will conclude on June 17.
The winner and as many as seven guests will get the prestigious opportunity to dine with Buffett at the Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in Manhattan.
91-year-old Buffett?has raised more than $34.2 million for the organization through lunch auctions in the past two decades.
The last winner of this auction was cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun, who had paid a record $4.57 million in 2019 for the lunch opportunity with Buffett.
No auctions were held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, it is not immediately clear why this year's lunch by Buffett is the last one.
The nonprofit organization Glide said in a statement "Mr. Buffett's treasured friendship with Glide will continue, but 2022 will be the grand finale of this particular event," as per Reuters.
Buffett's first wife Susan, who died in 2004, was the one who introduced him to Glide after volunteering for the charity.
The nonprofit organization Glide's services include free meals, shelter, HIV and hepatitis C tests, job training, and children's daycare and after-school programs, among others.
