Born on 9th March 1951, Zakir is the eldest son of veteran Tabla player Alla Rakha who was a regular accompanist of sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Zakir¡¯s father started teaching him ¡®Pakhawaj¡¯ at the age of 3 and he got involved in learning percussions soon after.

Zakir who was part of a rhythm band named Planet Drum won the 1992 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.

The band reunited after 15 years in 2007 and won another Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2009.

Zakir¡¯s First Cinematic Stint was Ismail Merchant¡¯s Heat and Dust where he not only composed the music but also starred in it.

Zakir is a proud recipient of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. He also won Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1990.

In 1999, America conferred the United States National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship on Hussain.
