Yet another Global NCAP result is out for two of the Indian makes and this time, it was the Honda Amaze and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis under the radar. The results were quite impressive for the former one, with Amaze scoring a four star rating out of five in the test. Ignis, meanwhile, was restricted to three.
The Indian made, Africa-spec Honda Amaze was tested as part of Global NCAP¡¯s Safer Cars for Africa campaign. The tests were conducted by crashing the vehicles into a deformable barrier at a speed of 65 kmph and at 40% offset. In comparison, the tests conducted in India are carried out at a speed of 56 kmph. Honda Amaze managed to score a cool 4-star rating for adult occupant protection, while the same was limited to one-star for the protection of a child occupants, even though Honda-recommended child seats were used for the tests. The team cited evidence of head exposure and probability of injury for the test dummies representing an 18-month old and a three-year old for the low rating. The NCAP details indicated that the Honda Amaze has a stable vehicle structure and footwell area. Other helping features include a driver seatbelt reminder, dual airbags and a front seatbelt pre-tensioners as standard. India-spec Amaze further enhances the safety with a speed warning system and seatbelt reminders for both front occupants as per the recent mandat by India¡¯s safety norms.
The results for Maruti Suzuki Ignis were somewhat similar, except the car managed to procure only three stars for adult occupant protection. Even with safety features like ABS and ISOFIX anchorages as standard, the protection offered to the driver¡¯s chest was deemed weak, while that to the driver's knees was marginal, as per Global NCAP. The team also declared that the bodyshell of the vehicle as unstable and incapable of withstanding any further loadings.
As for the child occupants, the Ignis lacks specific Child Restraint System (CRS), making the child seat not good enough to protect the chest area of a three year old child dummy.
Since the make of the cars for Africa and India and the testing standards for vehicles of both the regions are the same, the same four-star rating can be considered for the Indian version of Honda Amaze as well.
