After Chetak, Bajaj Auto Working On Sub-Rs 35,000 Electric Scooter
Bajaj has confirmed that it is working on producing electric scooters priced below Rs 35000 The company will be making these scooters as a part of a collaboration with Yulu a bike-sharing startup based around the shared use of electric vehicles. Yulu is attempting to procure at least 1 lakh such electric two-wheelers from Bajaj by the end of this year.
Bajaj had recently come up with its first ever electric vehicle offering with the revamped version of the renowned Chetak. It now seems like such mainstream electric scooters are not the company¡¯s only goals, as it is also eyeing to disrupt the ride sharing industry with its electric two-wheelers.
In a recent announcement, Bajaj has confirmed that it is working on producing electric scooters priced below Rs 35,000. The company will be making these scooters as a part of a collaboration with Yulu, a bike-sharing startup based around the shared use of electric vehicles.
The cheap electric scooters will be priced between Rs 30,000 and Rs 35,000, as confirmed by co-founder and CEO of Yulu - Amit Gupta. Gupta recently said, ¡°We are spending about $600 per bike. We are getting them manufactured in China and assemble them in India. With Bajaj Auto coming on board, we can bring down the price to $500 in the medium to long term. From over Rs 40,000, we can bring it down to Rs 30,000-35,000.¡±
Yulu is attempting to procure at least 1 lakh such electric two-wheelers from Bajaj by the end of this year. The count currently stands way low at just 4000 electric scooters in use across metropolitan Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
A major reason for Yulu to adopt these bikes will be the increase in power offered on them as compared to the prevalent electric two-wheelers being used by the company. The new Bajaj electric scooters will be single seaters and are expected to offer a better range as well as power to the Yulu riders.
The move will hold a two-way advantage for Bajaj. The company has a minority stake in Yulu and with their upcoming EV being used extensively in the service, Bajaj will invariably have a hold in the electric ride-sharing space in addition to the EV market in India.
