As new ropeway projects are underway in Dharamsala and Shimla, here are some existing ropeways that you can ride on.
1. Gulmarg Gondola, Jammu and Kashmir
Known as Asia's largest cable car system, it operates in two stages, the first being from the ski resort of Gulmarg to Kungdori Valley, and the second phase from Kungdori to Apparwath peak. With both stages combined, the ride spans about 2.5 km. A cable can accommodate six people in total and cost Rs. 600 from Gulmarg to Kungdori Valley and Rs. 800 from Kungdori to Apparwath peak.

2. Parwanoo Ropeway, Himachal Pradesh
A 35-km drive away from Chandigarh, this ropeway provides the view of what you might see from an aeroplane. Timber forests offer a lush green setting on the hills as the River Kaushalya meanders through it.

3. Raigad Ropeway, Maharashtra
This is probably the best way to get to Raigad Fort, which was once the nerve centre of Chhatrapati Shivaji's Maratha kingdom. If you are afraid of heights, be warned as the ascent is about 420 metres, but for the scenery below, it's all worth it.

4. Saputara Ropeway, Gujarat
Operating in the Dang district, it connects the Vaity Ropeway Resort to Sunset Point on Governor's Hill. The cost of a ticket is Rs. 40 and it requires 12 people on-board to operate.

This 1140 metre rope-way offers a grand view of of the Dhuandhar Falls in the middle of the Narmada river. The view of Bandarkoodini is breathtaking.

Connecting Auli with Joshimath, this is the best way to see the Himalayas up close especially the snow-capped peaks of Nanda Devi. The ride takes about 15 minutes but is slow and steady to give you time to click some scenic pictures. Chair lifts and ski lifts are also available.

The Karni Mata Temple witnesses many devotees throughout the year, and this ropeway was completed in 2008 to enhance transportation. It connects Macchala hill top to Deen Dayal Park which is on a hill near Lake Pichola.
