If 'Work From Home' Is A Blessing Then Why Are So Many Of Us Detesting It After Only A Week?

Working from home is one of the most liberating things to do. What¡¯s not to love, yeah? WRONG! Let me take you on a journey into the mind of an extrovert because introverts get enough attention as it is.

The commute from my living room to my comfy bed takes about 2.5 seconds, unless I'm interrupted by my folks to discuss a trivial piece of gossip or assign a homely responsibility like - motor band kar de, chai bana de and the likes. There have been several experiments that have been conducted where a set of people were asked to work from home for a fixed number of hours and report back. The feedback could have been phenomenal but what we fail to realize is that those people eventually did go back to their offices. Hence, rainbows and sunshine! Let¡¯s make you take a look at it from an extrovert¡¯s perspective, shall we?

Most days, we crib about our exhausting commute but you know what? It¡¯s that ¡®me time¡¯ which in hindsight not only soothes us, but also preps us to face the entire day.

As hypocritical as this may sound, most of us crib about an exhausting drive to and fro from work. Ironically, it¡¯s one of the many things that i have been missing for a week now. In the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak and work from home advisory, those two hours of blaring music and karaoke sessions while driving the car are being sorely missed.

The commute at home only consists of raiding the refrigerator for food, visiting the loo and then back to bed. On days when you feel a little adventurous, you throw the couch or table in the mix and spend time in those corners as well!

I want to apologise to everyone and the universe for constantly cribbing about my monotonous routine. While I yearned for a laid-back time at home for a major part of my life, now that we have it in abundance, it¡¯s so hard to not get frustrated. Utilizing free time only looks good on paper, practically it¡¯s very difficult to pass that time. How many items have you ticked off your to-do, list? None? that's right!

The worst hit is the sleeping schedule. There¡¯s absolutely no exhaustion from driving, running around at your workplace etc which used to help us sleep faster.

Insomnia has returned in our lives as sleep has evaded most of us. How much can you binge-watch, read or catch up with long-lost friends? There¡¯s a limit to everything. One week on, I'm counting days and pleading the fifth to free us from being home-bound.

We are tired of hearing that excess of everything is bad, right? Turns out it is the gospel truth

For months, I would look at my list of shows and movies to watch and crave for free time to catch up with social media. Lack of free time and willingness to burn the midnight oil made me miss out on so many passionate discussions and debates about a certain character and a mind-boggling plot-line.

Now that social-distancing has fetched us all the time in the world, I feel least-motivated to dedicate myself to one show/movie. All I end up doing, is surf the OTTs and expand my watch-list. Another thing that i learned is that procrastination is only fun when you have a lot on your plate. You¡¯ll eventually get tired of procrastinating as well.

Don¡¯t even get me started on being sloppy. I miss getting ready, trying out new outfits with matching makeup and accessories. Those raggy comfort clothes have started mocking me.

No matter how much you dislike some co-workers, after a week, you start missing even them, out of loneliness

While the comfort of your bed is one thing, working in a room with no one around can get pretty dull after a point of time. It¡¯s times like these that make you realise that those sutta sessions, group lunches and gossip breaks were high points of your day. It¡¯s human nature to crave attention and interaction even if you are an introvert and just prefer being the listener. Am i right?

Call me crazy but one week down and i have started feeling dehydrated, even though i haven¡¯t stepped out of my house because #CoronavirusOutbreak. My meal timings have become so inconsistent that breakfasts are being eaten during lunch time and dinners are being taken early morning. Counting in between munchies is not even on the cards. This is why no matter how much you bitch about your routine life, it¡¯s a lot more beneficial than you think.

They say some time apart helps to deepen the bond between two people but under present circumstances, it's only making things difficult, more so, for couples. When you are constantly in each other¡¯s faces, it can sometimes burn you and your partner out.

Excitement of seeing each other or spending quality time after a hard day of work loses precedence. Plus, the more you spend time, the more secrets are let out - For eg. one woman took to twitter to rant about how she was unbeknownst to the fact that her husband had severe anger issues when it came to work.

No, we are not trying to scare you but it could be a problem for some people. Therefore, separate work spaces/areas are suggested to create a balance and maintain privacy.

Last but not least, those random dinner and drinks plans seem like a different era altogether now, doesn't it?

Let¡¯s be realistic, you could be the biggest social butterfly out there but the kind of mechanical lives that we are leading, it limits our interaction to office, by a big margin. The maniacal working hours and worsening traffic conditions leave you no choice but to hang out with colleagues, more than those friends outside of work.

Come to think of it, you end up spending more time with your office family than your real one. In the light of the pandemic, not only do you miss going out, most of us can't wait to meet our office friends over drinks and bitch about the whole 'work from home' punishment.

The bottom line, however, remains the same. It¡¯s not about what the internet or popular opinion suggests - whatever helps you remain sane and happy. It could be working from home or out of an office - mental satisfaction is something that most of us are running after, at the end of the day.
