After rupee hits record low, Juhi Chawla's shocking post resurfaces, internet reacts hilariously: 'Thank God my underwear is¡'
The rupee hit a record low of Rs 85.16 against the US dollar, sparking discussions and memes online. Adding to the amusement, an old deleted tweet from Juhi Chawla about a past rupee dip resurfaced, leaving the internet in splits.
The rupee slipped 5 paise to a record low of 85.16 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday (December 24, 2024), driven by a stronger American currency and continuous foreign capital outflows. While the fall itself sparked a flurry of memes, the internet found unexpected hilarity in revisiting a comment from actress Juhi Chawla about a previous rupee dip. The comment, surprising in its context, has resurfaced and is leaving people amused¡ªmainly because it's not something you would expect her to say.
What Juhi Chawla had tweeted in 2013
In 2013, when the Congress government was in power, the Yes Boss actor had tweeted about the rupee's fall against the dollar: "Thank God, Apun ke underwear ka naam 'Dollar' hai. 'Rupee' hota to baar baar girta rehta!!"
"Thank God my underwear is Dollar. If it were a rupee, it would keep falling again and again"

Why is the rupee falling against the dollar?
The rupee's depreciation has picked up speed recently, with the drop from Rs 84 to Rs 85 taking just two months.
This is much faster than the previous slide from Rs 83 to Rs 84, which took 14 months, and the transition from Rs 82 to Rs 83, which stretched over 10 months.
This decline is part of a broader trend, as several Asian currencies also faced pressure on Thursday.
The Korean won, Malaysian ringgit, and Indonesian rupiah saw declines of 0.8%-1.2% during the day.
The rupee's weakness is fuelled by both global and domestic challenges.
Domestically, India's economic growth slowed to a seven-quarter low in the July-September quarter, coupled with a widening merchandise trade deficit and lackluster capital inflows.
Globally, the US dollar remains strong, bolstered by expectations of robust US economic policies.
The Federal Reserve's latest guidance is likely to further strengthen the dollar, adding to the rupee's woes.
