Aamir Khan's movie, Laal Singh Chaddha, has recently been in the news a lot. On Twitter, the phrase "boycott Laal Singh Chadha" was already trending. However, based on the marketing and anticipation around the film, it was predicted that Laal Singh Chaddha would have a great opening weekend.
The film's premiere was highly anticipated by the audience because it was expected to be this year's biggest moneymaker. However, Laal Singh Chaddha ended up being a great box office failure.
OTT vs. Theatre: A Forever Banter?
With early access to the movie via OTT platforms, he thinks that people would rather watch the movie at home in the comfort of their own homes than in a theatre.
The survival of theatres is attributed to the introduction of streaming services. However, is OTT really the villain as the superstar points out, or has the boycott trend hurt the movie more?
During an interview with Galatta Plus to promote his most recent film, Laal Singh Chaddha, The Dangal Actor said, "OTT is not a challenge to the cinema but we are actually making it a challenge. What we are saying is our films releasing in theatres, but you don¡¯t really need to come. Because in a few weeks you can see it at home. How do you expect people to come to theatres?¡±
Aamir emphasised the value of providing the audience with a straightforward option.
He further continued, "Either you come to theatres and watch the movie now or wait for six months to see it on OTT.¡±
The president of the Film Exhibitors United Organization of Kerala, K Vijayakumar, agrees with Aamir. The group has been requested that the OTT release window be extended from 42 to 56 days by the film chambers. Films by actors and filmmakers who disobey these rules will no longer be shown in Kerala theatres in the future, according to the Film Exhibitors United Organization of Kerala.
After Laal Singh Chaddha opens in theatres, Khan has said that he won't make it available for streaming for another six months.
Relatively small banners might not be able to afford to ignore the extra money from the sales of digital rights for as long, even though the production companies supporting movies like Laal Singh Chaddha are in for a struggle.
