Right from the pilot, viewers have been kept on their toes as a full blast of drama and entertainment has been bestowed on them.
Fans are now trying to connect the dots tying the prequel to the main events with every passing episode. Interestingly, the second episode had new opening credits and visuals with the cult favourite GoT theme playing in the background. Many fans have surmised that the dial movements might be a symbol of how the bloodlines shift as per moral alignment and family tree dispositions in House Of The Targaryen.
Without further ado, let's take a look at some of the events that have a GoT reference.
Easter Eggs related to Game Of Thrones
Queen Emma¡¯s reference to hatching Dragon eggs
In the pilot episode, Queen Aemma is shown carrying the heir of the House Targaryen. It was termed as a difficult pregnancy and we all witnessed the gory birthing scene which led to her as well as the newborn's demise. In the days leading up to her labour, King Viserys and Aemma share a tender moment while she's in a bathtub. She tells him, "I wouldn't be surprised if I hatch an actual dragon." The scene is a reference to the future when Daenerys Targaryen hatches dragon eggs at Khal Drogo's funeral fire in the finale episode of Game of Thrones season 1.
Rhaenyra and Alicent discuss Princess Nymeria
If the mere mention of this name didn¡¯t make you remember Arya¡¯s direwolf then you¡¯re not a true blue GoT fan. This was when Rhaenyra and Alicent were revising their lessons and they ended up talking about Princess Nymeria who was a warrior and pioneer female of House Martell.
Aegon¡¯s dream prophecy indicating that 'Winter Is Coming'
A heart-to-heart conversation between father-daughter duo Viserys and Rhaenyra has a major unveiling. He tells her about Aegon Targaryen's prophetic dream that indicates the coming of the Winter and the Night King with Whitewalkers in tow. He called this the "Song of Ice and Fire". This is a direct reference to the fateful Winter which we saw in Game of Thrones. As per Aegon, a Targaryen must be on the throne to protect the Seven Kingdoms from the White Walkers.
Viserys¡¯ dagger that was eventually passed on to Arya Stark which she used to kill the Night King
House Of The Dragon saw the debut of the Valyrian steel dagger. We saw Viserys holding the dagger that fans instantly recognised as the same one that Arya Stark used to kill the Night King in a sneak attack in Game of Thrones.
Daemon gifted Rhaenyra a necklace called Dark Sister
In an exchange between uncle and niece, we witnessed Daemon planting a necklace on Rhaenyra's nape as a gift. He called it Dark Sister. In the second season of GoT, Arya Stark mentioned Dark Sister¡¯s history in a conversation with Tywin Lannister. She recalled that Visenya Targaryen, sister of the first Targaryen king Aegon, wielded a Valyrian steel sword called Dark Sister.
If the Targaryen family lineage is making your head hurt then fret not, you are not alone. With repetitive names, incestuous marriages and multiple children, it¡¯s difficult to grasp the family tree.
Before diving right into it, let¡¯s revise the relationship between Jon and Danny.
For the unversed, Jon Snow wasn¡¯t the bastard child of Ned Stark. His real name was Aegon Targaryen and he was the son of Lyanna Stark and Daenerys¡¯s brother Rhaegar Targaryen which means that Danny was actually his aunt (Bua for all you desi folks).
Last but not the least, how are Jon Snow and Daenerys related to the central character Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen?
Spoiler Alert: To further simplify the relationships, it¡¯s vital to give out some plot secrets. If you wish to discover it on your own, retreat!
The focal point of this prequel is Rhaenyra Targaryen, the official heir to the throne after current king Viserys. That means she was the great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother of the mother of dragons Aka Danny. Add another great for Jon as he is one generation younger to his aunt cum lover Danny.
Further in the story, Rhaenyra will marry her uncle Daemon and the two will have two sons - Viserys II and Aegon III. Both Danny and Jon descended from Viserys II¡¯s lineage.
As you remember Danny, the golden crown fame brother of hers Viserys and Jon Snow¡¯s father Rhaegar were the three children of Mad King Aerys II and his wife Rhaella. Both Aerys II and Rhaella were children of sibling spouses King Jaehaerys II and Shaera Targaryen. (Before you panic and think of this as a typo, surprise! The Targaryens indulged in a lot of incestuous marriages and often siblings would tie the knot amongst each other for the sake of pure bloodlines)
Now, Jaehaerys and Shaera were the children of King Aegon V and Berta Blackwood. So on and so forth. Basically, the bottom line is that Rhaenya is Daenaerys¡¯s sixth great grandmother and Jon Snow¡¯s seventh great grandmother.
The more the story will progress, the better we¡¯ll be able to understand the timeline of the prequel.
House of the Dragon is touted to be spread over a span of five seasons. The current one is a 10-part series and new episodes are released every Monday at 6:30 AM on Disney + Hotstar.
