'Zameen Aasman Ka Fark Hai': Meena Kumari's stepson slams Sharmin Segal's Heeramandi-Pakeezah comparison
After Sharmin Segal said she was inspired by Meena Kumari for her role as Alamzeb in Heeramandi, now the legendary actress' grandson has slammed the comparison.
Sharmin Segal has become a household name, all thanks to Heeramandi. The actress, who happens to be Sanjay Leela Bhansali's niece, skyrocketed to fame with the series for all the wrong reasons. Her performance didn't quite win everyone over. Almost immediately after the web-series dropped, she found herself the target of trolls, and the criticism hasn't stopped since.
In her defense, Segal drew a parallel between her role and Meena Kumari's iconic performance in 1972 Pakeezah, claiming inspiration from the legendary actress's portrayal of depth and complexity. Now, the legendary actress' son has reacted to the entire controversy.
Meena Kumari's stepson reacts to Sharmin Segal's Heeramandi-Pakeezah comparison
In an interview with Zoom TV, the late actress' son Tajdar Amrohi slammed the Heeramandi-Pakeezah comparison and said, "Zameen aasman ka fark hai between Heeramandi and Pakeezah. Don¡¯t compare the two. Nobody can make Pakeezah again. Neither Meena Kumari nor Kamal Amrohi can ever be born again. I don't want to say much about this since Bhansali is a big fan of my father Kamal Amrohi. In every film of his, Bhansali tries to take shots in a very similar way as my father did. Once, he had come to Kamalistan Studio, he asked where my dad used to sit, where my dad walked. Out of great respect, he touched the ground where my dad sat. That was 15 years ago, and after that I never met him again. I must say here that each one of us has an individual taste. This all is my opinion. There might be people who have liked Heeramandi more than Pakeezah."

Sharmin Segal compared her performance in Heeramandi with that of Meena Kumari
The actress was answering a question about trolling when she said, "Meena Kumari was one of my inspirations." She thus highlighted the "nothingness" of her performance and added, "People will say what they have to say. They have the right to do that. Being a creative person, you are putting yourself out there for people to perceive you, right? Then they will say what they have to say. And then I go back and think, how can I ignore so many people reaching out to me and giving me so much love? Giving Alamzeb and the show so much love."
