Meet Captain Devi Sharan
Five masked men took control of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814 on December 24, 1999, when it was traveling from Kathmandu to Delhi. During the eight-day hijacking, Captain Devi Sharan, First Officer Rajinder Kumar, and Flight Engineer Anil Kumar Jaggia were all present. At the age of 37, Captain Sharan played a crucial role in ensuring the safe return of 188 passengers.
Captain Sharan described how the hijackers first gave him the order to take the plane to Pakistan in an interview with CNN. He rerouted the aircraft to Amritsar when they were denied permission to land there.
Crash landing and captain¡¯s presence of mind
The runway was closed and the airport lights were turned off when the plane finally touched down in Lahore. Sharan prepared for a crash landing as his fuel was getting low. When Captain Sharan saw people on the ground, he decided to postpone the landing despite his original plan to crash the aircraft. When Pakistani airport officials realized there was an immediate threat and authorized the flight to land just in time.
The learning factor of what the captain did is how it is very easy to panic in such situations even for people who are trained to handle things like it. The captain proved how his calm sense and presence of mind helped save so many lives.
IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is currently streaming on Netflix. Along with Vijay Varma the series also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Amrita Puri, Arvind Swamy, Manoj Pahwa, Patralekhaa, Kumud Mishra, and others.
