The world war film is an adaptation of Erich Remarque¡¯s landmark 1928 novel; an earlier Hollywood adaptation, directed by Lewis Milestone, won the best picture Oscar in 1930.
Directed by Edward Berger, the new version stars Felix Kammerer as an eager soldier Paul B?umer who is traumatised by life in the trenches.

Having premiered at the Venice film festival, All Quiet on the Western Front has managed to make a strong impression at previous awards ceremonies, including the Baftas where it bagged seven prizes including best film.
At the Oscars it defeated tough competitors in the international film category, including Jerzy Skolimowski¡¯s donkey fable EO and Irish-language drama The Quiet Girl, directed by Colm Bair¨¦ad.
Interestingly, the movie managed to bag a whopping nine Academy nominations. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the film¡¯s producer Malte Grunert had expressed that the reaction to their film was quite surprising.

He had said, ¡°The reaction and the resonance to the film, at this scale, did surprise me, yes. Obviously, there is a very much unwanted and sort of horrible relevance to the story because of the war in Ukraine.¡±
¡°The reason we felt the film was relevant to make now was it is the story of five boys who fall prey to nationalistic propaganda and lies and enter a war thinking it¡¯ll be an adventure. It¡¯s a rhetoric and a tone that has entered the political discourse again, this sort of right-wing propaganda. The film isn¡¯t just a reminder of the real horrors of war; [it] can also, like with Remarque¡¯s novel, remind us what happens if we give in to this propaganda and don¡¯t, as a society, resist it¡±, he further added.

Back home, it¡¯s all the more reasons to celebrate as two supremely talented women have brought home the Academy for Best Documentary Short Subject.
Directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, The Elephant Whisperers is the first Indian film to win an Oscar in this category and the third to be nominated after The House That Ananda Built and An Encounter With Faces which competed for Best Documentary Short in 1969 and 1979 respectively.

The film revolves around an indigenous couple Bomman and Belli who are adoptive parents of orphaned elephant calf named Raghu.
Right after the win, Monga took to her social media handles to share the happy news.
She wrote on Twitter, ¡°We just win the first ever Oscar for an Indian Production! Two women did this! I am still shivering.¡±
