Even though the Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden programme hasn't even been released, some streamer execs are wondering why it's already been given a second season given its challenging production and hefty expenses.
Citadel, which ranks behind Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power as the second most expensive show of all time, has a budget that has reportedly surpassed $300 million, according to a few sources close to the production, according to The Hollywood Reporter, this amounts to nearly Rs 2500 crores.
When Joseph Russo intervened and appointed Daniel Weil as showrunner in December 2021, Citadel struck a barrier.
According to a source who spoke to THR, Joe's involvement led to an increase in production costs because he "tossed out a huge bunch of material" and necessitated numerous reshoots. The alterations had to be made as a result of audience input, according to Mike Larocca, president and co-founder of the Russos' production firm, AGBO. ¡°We felt like it needed some more character work early to draw people into the show. It was that straightforward,¡± he said.
Citadel was originally planned to contain eight episodes, each lasting an hour, according to THR. But, the streamer condensed them into six, forty-minute segments. Despite this, a second season of the show has been ordered.
A veteran at Amazon told the publication, ¡°There are a couple of relationships where I don¡¯t really understand the bet that is being made. But Jen (Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios) believes in the Russos.¡±
A few Amazon execs laughed at Priyanka Chopra's claim that she was finally receiving pay parity for the first time in her career because the reshoots also resulted in the cast members being paid "more than planned." They made light of the fact that she got more money as a result of the reshoots by joking that it was "the first and the second time." Priyanka asserted that she only received equal pay for the first time in her career on Citadel during an interview with Jennifer Salke at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) 2023.
Citadel will begin streaming on April 28.
It was created by Joe and Anthony Russo and is envisioned as the "mothership" show with regional variations in many nations. Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville as Dahlia Archer, Osy Ikhile as Carter Spence, and Ashleigh Cummings as Abby Conroy are also featured in the series.
