Early life
Prashant Tamang was born in Darjeeling, West Bengal. Having lost his father in an accident, Tamang dropped out of school and became a policeman with the Kolkata Police. He performed for the police orchestra in Kolkata Police.

After trying out for Indian Idol in Kolkata, he was selected for the following round and placed in the top 10. Tamang and Amit Paul reached the top two of Indian Idol 3 after a lot of effort. He then proceeded to emerge as the well-deserved winner of the show.

Following his victory on Indian Idol 3, Tamang signed with Sony BMG to release his debut album, Dhanyavad, which had songs in both Hindi and Nepali.
Films and beyond
Tamang began his acting career in Nepali cinema in 2009. Gorkha Paltan, his debut feature, came out in 2010. Angalo Yo Maya Ko was his second film and he was last seen as a crazy sniper in season two of Paatal Lok.
