BLACKPINK's Jennie accused of cultural appropriation over new song 'Mantra', netizens accuse her of 'insulting Hinduism, Buddhism'
Jennie of BLACKPINK has landed in trouble over the title of her new song, 'MANTRA'. Some Indian netizens have accused of her cultural appropriation for using the Sanskrit term, highlighting it doesn't go with the vibe of the song.
BLACKPINK member Jennie has finally announced her much-anticipated comeback. The celebrated K-pop idol recently shared that her new single, Mantra, will be released on October 11. However, the singer has already landed in hot waters over her upcoming song. Scroll ahead to know why.
Jennie under fire over 'Mantra'
Jennie has been accused of cultural appropriation over the name of her new song Mantra. An internet user pointed out that 'Mantra' is derived from two Sanskrit words that define a tool for the mind. Many said the singer-actor has picked up the Indian term without holding any knowledge of its meaning and usage, highlighting how the lyrics do not match the title of the song.
"Indian people are mad and they're right! The Mantra meaning doesn't match the lyrics! Jennie apologies, you're making mistakes again and again," one user wrote.

"The word "mantra" has literally nothing to do with the lyrics she wrote and it is disrespectful... It's a Sanskrit word which is related to Hindus... You've disrespected our lord Ganesha before and now this ?? Who do you think you are ????," wrote another netizen.

Rubies come out in Jennie's support
Amidst the massive trolling, Rubies, a term coined for Jennie's dedicated fanbase, has come out in her support. Her Indian fans called the accusations 'fake rage,' highlighting how many American artists have previously used 'Mantra' in their songs. Hailing her as a marketing genius, Rubies also lauded her power move to install billboards of her upcoming song in Delhi and Bangalore.
"Yk what's funny, Jennie probably saw that culture appropriation tweet about her using the word 'mantra' and decided to put a billboard right in the capital of India, like that's IT GIRL behaviour," one user wrote.
