The 1998 film, starring Manoj Bajpayee, Urmila Matondkar, and Saurabh Shukla instantly developed a massive fan following, and is considered as one of the best gangster movies of all time in India.
Ram Gopal Varma's Satya is hands down one of the most commendable films he has ever directed in his entire career in Bollywood. Today marks 25 years since the gangster film was released on the big screen.
The 1998 film, starring Manoj Bajpayee, Urmila Matondkar, and Saurabh Shukla developed a massive fan following, and is considered as one of the best gangster movies of all time in India.
The movie had a very flawless approach to crime in Mumbai and also introduced many now-famous people back in 1998 such as Anurag Kashyap, Apurva Asrani, and even Bajpayee who was the lead in the film.
The film's budget was reportedly only Rs 2.5 crore, and its eventual popularity made it gain Rs 15 crore after it was released. However, it was considered to be a flop on the day it released. In fact, Bajpayee took to social media to reveal how he felt when the film was released in theatres.
He wrote, "And my life changed...!!! Can¡¯t forget the 3rd July 1998 ..monsoon..it was declared a flop and how it turned out to be biggest hit ..ran for 25 weeks..!!satya!"
People also left comments on his Instagram posts celebrating the silver jubilee anniversary of this outstanding performance in Satya.
Actor Samir Soni wrote, "One of the finest performances and film in the last 25 years. Congrats brother."
"Characters n films that changed Indian Cinema," commented another user.
"Mumbai ka king kon hai mujhe malum nai... Lekin a keh sakta hoon ki Bollywood ka king Manoj bajpayee hai."
"This performance has changed my life in big way ! Thank you Sir !"
"The title should be bhiku not Satya.""
"Movie name Satya par Purna movie bhiku mhaatre character ne khaa daala.. my favorite u are always."
Earlier, Bajpayee had told Cyrus Broacha during a conversation for his YouTube channel that RGV wanted him to portray the role of Satya, and not Mhatre which left the actor feeling disappointed. However, now he is glad that the director made that call because Mhatre's role played a huge part in turning it around for Bajpayee's career.
He said, ¡°He called me and said I want you to play the second guy. I was heartbroken. He lied. I felt what is the use? He said come over. I went to his house and he said you know that I can cast anyone for the lead but I need someone who has a great personality, great presence in front of the camera for Biku Mhatre."
