'Controversy' is definitely Bollywood's second name. Both Salman Khan and Kabir Khan are in trouble now as they have been slapped with legal notices by Anil Singh Pradhan, Chitrakoot, UP, who is a social activist. A Hindi daily has claimed that the notice has been filed because Bajrangi Bhaijaan has hurt the sentiments of Hindus. Pradhan's objection is since Bajrangi is the name of a Hindu God, the word Bhaijaan is inappropriate to be used. Anil Singh Pradhan added to his allegation that Kabir Khan is releasing the film on Eid so that he could offend the activists even more.
But that's not it! There have been weirder cases in the past where films have landed up in trouble for nothing majorly objectionable. Take a look at 7 such instances.
1. PK
Financial Express
While the makers of PK were enjoying the success, the movie had to face a lot of controversies. Prashant Patel, Secretary of Hindu Legal Cell, had filed an FIR against director Rajkumar Hirani, Aamir, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and UTV head, Sidharth Roy Kapur. Patel felt that the movie had portrayed Lord Shiva in bad light. The dialogue that came into the limelight for all the wrong reasons was, "Jo darta hai vo hi mandira jaata hai". Which according to them demeaned God.
2. Billu
Wordpress/kingsrk
Salon and beauty associations ganged up against the makers of Billu, which was earlier called Billu Barber, because according to them, the usage of the word 'barber' was highly objectionable. Later SRK promised one of the senior members of the association that he would do something about it. So his team was sent to paste a white sheet of paper over the word 'Barber'. King Khan said that though he felt that the term was not derogatory, he did not want to offend anybody.
3. Fire
Autostraddle
Deepa Mehta's unconventional and dynamic way of looking at things has never been easily digested by Indian audiences. Almost all her films proved controversial for her including Fire. Hindu groups like the Shiv Sena didn't like her way of showing a lesbian relationship between two sisters-in-laws in a Hindu family. This further caused a lot of troubles for the leading actors, Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das. Deepa Mehta and the cast even received death threats. All this hoopla landed in a nationwide ban of the film.
4. Calendar Girl
Bollywood Hungama
After realistic films like Fashion and Heroine, Madhur Bhandarkar's next is called Calendar Girl. The film has already caught the public eye because the Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) did not appreciate the trailer of the film. A source added, "The trailer contains a lot of provocative and sensuous content. There was even a shot of a nude woman which we had to of course snip off before granting the trailer a 'U/A' certificate. We don't know how or why Bhandarkar came to us with a trailer that contained a nude shot. He should know that such a shot can never be passed in a trailer."
5. Oh My God
Thebetterindia
Makers of the film Oh My God had a lot of controversies to deal with, as a film as provocative and anti-ritualistic, was bound to be arm-twisted by a religious organization. Later, the honourable High Court of Madhya Pradesh asked the Central Board of Film Certification (CFBC) to act against objectionable comments against Hinduism in the film because according to them, the film made derogatory references towards God and religion.
6. Son of Sardar
apnatimepass
Just because of one dialogue in Son Of Sardar, actor-producer Ajay Devgn was sent a legal notice by lawyer Navkiran Singh as it had hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikhs. The dialogue that caused it all was, "In case Sardars would not have been there, then on whom would the jokes be made?". Seriously wondering why Santa-Banta jokes were never banned.
7. Delhi Belly
Siliconeer
Automobile company Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) was on the vege of sending a legal notice to the makers of Delhi Belly for ¡°allegedly depicting one of the company¡¯s cars in a derogatory manner¡±. A spokesperson from HMIL added, ¡°Our legal team is looking into the matter and watching the film clips. Accordingly, we will decide our future course of action.¡± The production house denies any knowledge of any such lawsuit. All this because the car apparently ¡°looked a lot like a Santro¡±, and a few dialogues from the movie referred to the car were in bad taste.
