Abhishek Bachchan Rejected Rang De Basanti Because Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Is 'World's Worst Narrator'
Abhishek Bachchan calls Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra world's worst narrator and the reason for rejecting cult film Rang De Basanti.
You can't predict a blockbuster, can you? Everyone thought Bombay Velvet will be a superhit, but it turned out to be a dud at the box office. Similarly, Robert DeNiro turned down the role of Jack Sparrow as he thought it would be a flop. Everyone has made bad choices including Abhishek Bachchan. Do you Jr Bachchan rejected Rang De Basanti?
Why Abhishek Bachchan rejected Rang De Basanti?
While the actor didn't reveal the role he was offered, he said he rejected the film because Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was a bad narrator.
He said that the filmmaker is the "worst narrator".
Before RDB, Mehra narrated the script of a film called Samjhauta Express to Amitabh hoping he would come on board as a producer.
"That¡¯s when I realised Rakeysh is the world's worst narrator. Just read his script, never get a narration from him. He will confuse you, which he did to me during Rang De Basanti," he said in conversation with Galatta Plus.
He added, "I didn't understand why they were cutting from timezone to timezone. It was called Painted Yellow in those days. I said, ¡®Mujhe samajh nahi aayi, mujhe nahi karni¡¯ (I didn't get it, I don't want to do it). Then he made Rang De Basanti. Next time he came for Delhi-6, I said, ¡®Haan, kar lo.¡¯ (Ya, let's do it) I didn't even read the script."
Abhishek Bachchan didn't reveal which role he was offered in Rang De Basanti, which eventually starred Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, Siddharth, Kunal Kapur, Soha Ali Khan, R Madhavan and Atul Kulkarni. He, however, collaborated with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra in Delhi 6, which failed to create the magic on the big screen.
Not just Abhishek, several other actors including Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Shahid Kapoor and Manoj Bajpyee rejected pivotal roles in the movie.
Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Shahid had even confessed, "I regret not doing the film. They wanted me to play the role of Siddharth. I¡¯d cried while reading the script and loved it, but unfortunately couldn¡¯t make time for it."
