'They're Telling Stories, We're Selling Stars': Anupam Kher On Bollywood v/s South Films Debate
According to the actor, Bollywood films are more obsessed with stars, while South films focus on content.
2022 hasn't been a great year for Bollywood. Apart from films like 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' and 'Bhool Bhulaiya 2', all other films have failed to impress the audience.
Anupam Kher, whose movie The Kashmir Files is this year's highest-grossing Hindi film, has expressed his views on why Bollywood films have faltered at the box office while South Indian movies have seen massive success during the same time.
According to the actor, Bollywood films are more obsessed with stars, while South films focus on content.
The Telugu adaptation of Anupam's most recent movie, Karthikeya 2, starring Nikhil Siddhartha and dethroned Laal Singh Chaddha and Dobaaraa at the Hindi box office.
In a recent interview about the movie, Anupam praised the South Indian film's approach.
In a conversation with ETimes, Nikhil spoke about the need to keep a tab on the audience's pulse to make relevant movies.
Talking about the same, Anupam weighed in and said,
"You make things for consumers. (Problem starts) The day you start looking down on consumers, we're doing you a favor by making a great film. Now you are watching a great film.¡¯ A collective effort achieves greatness, and I have learned by doing films in Telugu...I just did another film in Telugu; I did a movie in the Tamil language; I¡¯m going to do a Malayalam film."
Kher added,
"I think over there, I¡¯m not differentiating between the two, but I think (their) cinema is relevant because they are not aping Hollywood. They are telling stories; over here, we are selling stars."
Anupam, who has a supporting role in the film, celebrated its success in a post on his Instagram account, writing,
"Meri to nikal padi dosto (I am on a roll) The Kashmir Files ke baad meri Karthikeya 2 film bhi blockbuster hai!! (After The Kashmir Files, my film Karthikeya 2 is also a blockbuster)."
Karthikeya 2 is a mystery adventure film written and helmed by Chandoo Mondeti. It is the sequel to the 2014 film Karthikeya. The story follows Nikhil's Dr. Karthikeya as he hunts for Lord Krishna's lost anklet.
