After Prabhas' upcoming film Kalki 2898 AD (Project K) was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con, it has left many fans pointing out the similarities between the film and Timoth¨¦e Chalamet's Dune.
The first glimpse of the film shows Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Prabhas in a dystopian futuristic world stuck in a war-like situation. Prabhas is the saviour of the people, and the filmmakers also hinted at a villain without revealing his face.
The internet had a lot to say about the film's first look by comparing it to Hollywood film Dune starring Timoth¨¦e Chalamet and Zendaya.
'Project k looks like a cheap Dune rip off with a little star wars inspo,' wrote a user on Twitter.
'Project k of prabhas is literally the first copy of dune,' wrote another user.
'Seems like Project K is heavily inspired with Dune/riddick and starwars,' commented a user.
'Project K is totally giving Dune part 1 vibes like everything seems similar,' said one more user.
There were also many netizens who defended the similarities and said taking inspiration in art is never a wrong thing. Here are some reactions.
Crazy how us Indians will call Project K copied, while a film like Rebel Moon gets off easy. Both are very clearly inspired by Dune & Star Wars, but both get very different reactions. Sad how Indians try to pander to Western media & write off something exciting that's desi.

That said, Project K looks like sci-fi and VFX done right. The imagery & music seems very atmospheric, but still not very sure of Prabhas here. Nice to Pasupathy play a meaty role here. It doesn't seem to hide the Dune & Star Wars inspiration. Overall seems nice.

George Lucas himself said Star Wars was influenced by Dune. If people don¡¯t question Star Wars, then why are we questioning Project K? Project K might have influences from Western science fiction like Star Wars & Dune, but it¡¯s storyline and emotions are as Indian as ever.

Vyjayanthi fucked up by not releasing DP's whole costume. Now she looks like Zendaya's character from Dune and that's all twitter can think of. Dune has been influential since decades. It led to Lucas making Star Wars. Project K having the same aesthetics isn't a war crime lmao.

Project K looks like a mix of Blade runner and Dune in terms of it's visuals and some of it looks really good. So fingers crossed for this one. If it has even a average to good story line it can rank a lot of money.

If PPL getting vibes of star wars, dune or any Hollywood sci-fi movie then director is super sucessful in bringing international futuristic feel to this film.
Prabhas and team are trying to do different films.
Earlier, the film's poster was called out for copying Marvel's Iron Man 3 poster. While some called Prabhas India's Iron Man, others were not so pleased about the similarities and said the character looks like a 'sasta Iron Man'. They even drew comparisons between the poster and Robert Downey Jr's 'Iron Man 3' poster since both posters show the actors in similar poses.
According to the filmmakers, Kalki 2898 AD is going to take the audience on a journey they have never experienced before in Indian cinema. They will be offered an "unparalleled and immersive cinematic experience".
The director of the film Nag Ashwin said that he loves science fiction and mythology, and his latest project is a product of his love for Mahabharata and Star Wars.
"I grew up with both Mahabharata and Star Wars. Making a film that combines both these worlds felt ideal, and thus, Kalki 2989 AD was born," the filmmaker told ANI.
The film is scheduled to release next year.
