Rishab Shetty's 'Kantara' Beats 'KGF 2' To Become Highest-Rated Indian Film On IMDb

On September 30, Rishab Shetty's film Kantara was released in theatres, much to the joy of his devoted audience. The fans love the film, and the proof is that it's still ruling the box office.

The movie achieved a remarkable achievement on Tuesday when its national box office receipts for the day topped those of the blockbusters Ponniyin Selvan: I and Chiranjeevi's GodFather.

The movie is back in the headlines for yet another unique reason. On IMDb, it has risen to the top spot for Indian films.

The movie Kantara, which will premiere in Hindi on October 14, has a record-breaking IMDb rating of 9.6. It scored significantly higher than blockbusters like Yash's KGF 2 (8.4) and the SS Rajamouli-helmed RRR (8).

The Kannada period action thriller was written, directed, and starred by Rishab Shetty. It was released on September 30.

What is Kantara about?

Set in the fictional village of Dakshina Kannada, "Kantara" follows a Kambala champion, played by Shetty, who comes to loggerheads with an upright forest range officer, Murali (Kishore).

Kambala is an annual race, held from November to March in coastal Karnataka, in which a jockey drives a pair of buffaloes tied to the plow through parallel muddy tracks.

The producer added that "Kantara" is a different genre than "KGF," the period action film franchise. "The distinct storyline of the movie is surely going to intrigue the fans nationally as well as globally," he said.

In the press release, the makers also said that the Hindi version of the movie would be released on over 800 screens across India.

"Kantara" also features Achyuth Kumar and Sapthami Gowda in pivotal roles.

Following the overwhelming response from moviegoers thus far, the movie is being dubbed and distributed in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu after grossing 58 crores in Karnataka since its release.
