Rani Mukerji's 'Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway' Is Inspired By This Real Indian Couple's Brave Tale
In 2011, the Norwegian child welfare department, Barnevarne, took Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya's two children into custody and put them with a foster family.
It's been more than a decade since the controversial court case between an Indian couple and the government of Norway about the custody of their two children, which caused a commotion all over the globe.
In 2011, the Norwegian child welfare department, Barnevarne, took Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya's two children into custody and put them with a foster family.
Today, the couple's ordeal, which included their battle against a whole country to reclaim custody of their children, has been adapted into a movie that stars Rani Mukherjee.
On March 17, this year, 'Mrs. Chatterjee versus Norway' will finally see the light of day, some 12 years after Sagarika's suffering started.
Anurup and Sagarika were forced to give up custody of their children, Avigyan, three years old, and Aishwarya, one-year-old, in May of 2011, when Norwegian authorities objected to Sagarika hand-feeding their newborn daughter and likened it to force-feeding.
They also claimed that there was insufficient space for the children to play. They were also accused of dressing their children and playing with them in ways that were "unsuitable."
Even though the child was allowed to share a bed with his father, the Child Protection Agency in Norway insisted that the little boy should have his own room with a separate bed.
After a diplomatic spat between the two nations, the authorities in Norway concluded that the children's father's brother should have custody of them.
This decision allowed their father to return with his children to India.
Yet at that time, tensions between Anurup and Sagarika had already grown.
Sagarika had to go to court to regain custody of her kids. Sagarika finally went home with her kids after a lengthy legal battle.
In January 2013, the Calcutta High Court ruled in her favor, granting her custody of her children Abhigyan and Aishwarya.
Following Sagarika's victory in the custody case, she expressed relief in an interview with NDTV in 2013.
"It's a huge relief, and I want to convey my regards to my well-wishers."She added, "My ordeal is finally over. I cannot express my emotions because I couldn't meet my children for a long time. I pray to God that children can always stay with me."
On Thursday, the makers of ¡®Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway¡¯ unveiled the film¡¯s trailer.
Playing a fierce woman, Rani is seen fighting against an entire Norwegian government to reunite with her children.
The trailer shows how happily Mrs. Chatterjee (Rani) enjoys living in Norway with her husband and two kids, Shubh and Shuchi.
However, one day, government officials come to her house and snatch away her kids from her. She later learns that the government has taken the kids away from her after they decide that the Chatterjee has been unable to care for them adequately.
The latter half of the trailer shows Rani fighting against the Norwegian foster care system to regain her children's custody.
