Sunny Deol Recalls How Bollywood Had Turned Its Back On Gadar And Critics Wrote Bad Reviews
Sunny Deol recalled on The Kapil Sharma show how Bollywood had turned its back on Gadar EK Prem Katha and critics only wrote bad reviews.
Most people would name Gadar in the list of iconic Hindi films ever made. Gadar isn't just a film but an emotion for the people of India. The movie starring Ameesha Patel and Sunny Deol has its sequel releasing on Aug 11.
But did you know Bollywood had turned its back on the film?
"Jab Gadar ¨C Ek Prem Katha lagi, tab humein nahin pata tha ki yeh film gadar machayegi. People used to say, ¡®Yeh Punjabi film hai. Isse Hindi mein dub karo¡¯. Some distributors said, ¡®Main toh nahin kharidunga yeh film¡¯. So we did face a lot of issues. Lekin janta ko film itni pasand aayi ki unhone sab ka munh bandh karwa diya! Unhone hi humein himmat di hai ki hum part 2 banayein", Sunny Deol recently revealed on The Kapill Sharma Show.
In fact, people called it Gutter: Ek Prem Katha.
Director Anil Sharma had earlier revealed to TOI, "We had over 50 trials, and the film was not getting sold. The industry didn¡¯t understand it. There was a distributor who had bought the distribution rights for Gadar... After the first trial with a hundred people in attendance, he said, ¡®Mera paisa wapas kar do, mujhe yeh film nahi chahiye."

Despite the box office number soaring high, the critics were still bashing the film. "Eventually, the film got the cash registers flowing with numbers. Theatres ran packed to capacity for weeks. One theatre owner called fearing uska theatre public ki bheed sey toot jayega. And then, I saw a review called my film Gutter: Ek Prem Katha. I kept it aside because the public verdict was already pretty clear," he said.
