Can¡¯t wait for Kanguva? 5 Suriya films to revisit ahead of the Siva-directed film¡¯s release

Suriya is one of the biggest names in the Tamil film industry. The mass hero enjoys a strong fan following because of his striking screen presence and powerful performances. Suriya will soon be seen in Kanguva, slated to hit the screens on November 14.

The film has created a great deal of buzz among the audience as it features him in an intense new avatar. The fantasy action drama also marks his first collaboration with Siva, the director of blockbusters such as Viswasam and Siruthai. With Suriya set to woo fans with Kanguva, here is a look at five films that bear testimony to his talent.

Jai Bhim (2021)

Suriya experimented with his image when he starred in TJ Gnanavel¡¯s Jai Bhim, a hard-hitting film about state violence against a marginalised community. The content-oriented film featured the actor as a lawyer and gave him an opportunity to sink his teeth into a realistic character.

The film lacked mass elements but made up for it with its intense narrative. Jai Bhim, which premiered on Prime Video in 2021, received rave reviews with critics lauding the direction and screenplay.

Soorarai Pottru (2020)

Sudha Kongara¡¯s Soorarai Pottru featured Suriya as Maara, a character inspired by Air Deccan founder GR Gopinath, and highlighted his attempts at making aviation services accessible to the common man.

¡®Naddippin Nayakan¡¯ essayed the challenging role with ease and excelled in the emotional scenes. He was equally good in the romantic scenes with Aparna Balamurali. Moreover, his expressions in the heartwarming climax sequence were a treat to watch. Sudha later remade the Prime Video original film in Hindi as Sarfira, starring Akshay Kumar.

Singam (2010)

Suriya played a fearless cop in Singam, which marked his first collaboration with Hari. The film featured several high-octane action scenes and powerful punch dialogues, which helped it click with the mass audience.

Suriya did complete justice to Hari¡¯s vision and impressed the audience with his superb body language and intense dialogue delivery. The film emerged as a blockbuster and attained cult status. It was later remade in Hindi as Singham with Ajay Devgn in the lead.

Ghajini (2005)

AR Murugadoss¡¯ Ghajini featured Suriya as a business tycoon who tries to avenge his girlfriend¡¯s murder while batting anterograde amnesia. The actor did complete justice to the brutal action scenes and managed to channel the character¡¯s vulnerability with effortless ease.

He was also at his best in the romantic sequences, which added emotional depth to the narrative. The film, shot on a budget of Rs 7 crore, grossed Rs 50 crore worldwide and emerged as a blockbuster.

Kaakha Kaakha (2003)

Nearly seven years before the release of Singam, Suriya played a sincere cop in Gautham Menon¡¯s action-thriller Kaakha Kaakha . The film centered on the events that unfold when the protagonist kills a dreaded gangster and soon find himself at loggerheads with his brother. The film featured an emotional narrative and realistic action scenes.

Suriya's chemistry with Jyothika, who played his wife, also proved to be one of the film¡¯s big highlights. The film did well at the box office and received rave reviews with most critics praising the performances.
