Before we became a part of the Twitter woke clan, we were all busy watching and loving films that we now label 'problematic'. While it's easy to find faults and call a movie 'regressive' but there are some movies you can't just dismiss because they have been a part of your teenage years.
Before we became a part of the Twitter woke clan, we were all busy watching and loving films that we now label 'problematic'. While it's easy to find faults and call a movie 'regressive', there are some movies you can't just dismiss because they have been a part of your teenage years.
Just when you start to understand the definition of love, in those early teens, you tend to associate and connect your life to a film and come on, most of us have done it.
While some of us have cried on 'Ek Fariyaad' from Tum Bin, many of us have romanticized our crushes on 'Sunta Hai Mera Khuda' from Pukaar.
As a 90's kid, most of us are guilty of watching these films repeatedly because they're comforting, unapologetic, and make us want to forget the harsh realities of the world.
While the DDLJ fan club (I am an SRK fan, but I still don't get the hype around DDLJ) would never agree how cool these romantic dramas are, you would realize how these 12 films have comforted us our bad days. Read on.
1. Tum Bin
You¡¯re not a true-blue 90¡¯s kid if you don¡¯t remember a single song from this movie. A movie that went on to receive a cult status in all these years is a classic for a reason. Starring Priyanshu Chatterjee, Sandali Sinha, Himanshu Malik, and Raqesh Vashisth in pivotal roles, this film is a tragic tale of two lovers who become victims of their own destiny. If Tum Bin had to be renamed, it should be called, The Fault In Their Stars.
Watch this movie and reminisce about the good old days of the 2000s.
2. Raju Chacha
Each one of us has cried on the scene when Rishi Kapoor is trying to save his life after a car crash. While his kids try everything to save him, he falls from a cliff in slow motion. We have all wept, laughed while watching this movie and cute love story of Kajol and Ajay Devgn that stars as a parallel in this family drama.
3. Josh
¡°Apun Bola, Tu Meri Laila¡± is not just a song. It¡¯s an emotion. Breaking his lover boy image, Shah Rukh Khan stepped in as a local Gunda in the film. He played Aishwarya Rai¡¯s protective brother in the film. Apart from songs that still exist in our playlist to the whole setup and feel of the movie that felt different from movies of that time, Josh is a film you can watch any day.
4. Hum Tumhaare Hain Sanam
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Madhuri Dixit, this one was an awkward love story but still made the audience choose between the two superstars. A star-studded love triangle was a story of an insecure husband who finds it difficult to trust his wife and her growing closeness with her best friend. If you¡¯re looking for a star-studded past-time, watch this one without any hesitation.
5. Dulhan Hum le Jaayenge
Is it just me, or even you remember the awkward scene where Karisma Kapoor tries to commit suicide and Salman is seen chasing her to save her life? There is much more to this comic drama than this scene, like the song ¡°Jaane Kya Hua Hai,¡± which is way better than all the crappy remixes we hear every day.
6. Mujhse Dosti Karoge
There is no rhyme or logic to this film or why Kareena calls Hrithik ¡®Mr. America¡¯ when he lives in London, but this film can cheer you up. This Kunal Kohli drama lacks logic very often. Still, just like the love beyond any logic and reason, this film too transcends the boundaries of sensibility and has been made for entertaining you. Hrithik, Kareena, and Rani Mukerji will make you cringe and laugh.
6. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein
No matter how many exotic ice-creams you try in the world, the flavor and charm of Vanilla will comfort you the most on your lowest days. RHTDM is one such film. It comforts you, mesmerizes you, and makes you forget how problematic the film is. Stalking isn¡¯t cool, but Madhavan¡¯s irresistible charm obviously makes you want to forgive him instantly.
7. Pyar Toh Hona Hi Tha
When Jaspinder Narula sings ¡°Tu ru turu¡¡±, you know you¡¯re back to the good old days of the 2000s, when all you wanted to do was play this song on repeat and daydream about your crush. Ajay Devgn and Kajol¡¯s film was the real Jab We Met, where the lead is seen leaving her fiance to be with the man she truly loves. This film is funny, enjoyable, and a complete delight to watch.
8. Nayee Padosan
Three guys aim at wooing a new hot neighbour, but there are challenges at every step of the way. No matter how many times you watch this film, you will laugh every time.
9. Pukaar
Anil Kapoor is the OG lover boy who has a minimum of two women fighting for him in every film. Be it Judaai or Pukaar, Anil Kapoor always finds himself in a love mess, thanks to his simplicity and charm. Well, Pukaar wasn¡¯t just a love story but a film that revolved around the backdrop of terrorism. Thanks to Rahman and Madhuri Dixit¡¯s Kay Sera Sera, this film is a consistent favorite film of every 90¡¯s kid.
10. Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani
The title is self-explanatory, but the film never received the level of validation and appreciation that it should have. PBDHH was way ahead of its time, and its star cast was its biggest strength. Commendable supporting actors supported Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan, and the film dealt with many sensitive topics with utmost sincerity. Aziz Mirza¡¯s film is a must-watch for every SRK fan as it proves how he can pull any and every role with ease.
11. Kareeb
Birju and Neha¡¯s love story hits a bumpy road because of the difference in their financial backgrounds, but against all odds, they fight for their love. It is impossible not to develop a crush on Bobby Deol after watching this film again. It¡¯s a challenge. Are you up for it?
12. Pardes
"Aashiq hai yeh chor nahi hai main kya karun, dil pe mera zor nahi hai main kya karun.." When Shah Rukh Khan mouths these lines while driving a car, you want to sing along. This song sung beautifully by Sonu Nigam remains the OG heartbreak song for every 90's kid. Starring Mahima Chaudhary, Shah Rukh Khan, and Apoorv Agnihotri in lead roles, Pardes was a beautiful film that taught us how 'it's all about loving your own country and traditions'. While many label the film as regressive but it still changed the lives of its actor and proved to be a big hit.
