Not only did Hooda undergo a significant physical transformation for his portrayal of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, but he also delved into financial sacrifices, including selling his father's properties to finance the film.
During a recent appearance on the BeerBiceps podcast, Hooda shed light on the challenges encountered during the production of the film, citing financial constraints as a major hurdle. He candidly shared the personal toll the endeavour took, recounting the decision to liquidate his father's properties in Mumbai to secure funding.
Reflecting on the obstacles faced, Hooda remarked, "I put all my effort into it, but it didn't happen. The team that was associated with the film didn't intend to make a good-quality film. They only wanted to make a film. When I came in the capacity of a director, that quality was not going to work. So, there were many problems relating to the film's production."
Discussing the financial strain, the 'Sarbjit' actor disclosed, "My father had saved up and bought a few properties for me in Bombay (Mumbai), and I let go of them for this film. I spent everything on this film. I felt I could not stop making this film. The kind of support this film should have received, it didn't get."
Hooda's commitment to the role of Savarkar also took a toll on his physical health, as he underwent a dramatic weight loss regimen, followed by a subsequent period of weight gain when the film faced setbacks. Despite the challenges, Hooda persevered, resorting to extreme measures such as fasting to achieve the required physique for the role.
'Swatantrya Veer Savarkar', released in Hindi and Marathi on March 22, has unfortunately struggled to find success at the box office, garnering only Rs 12.50 crore nett in India.
Despite the underperformance, Hooda's unwavering dedication to the project stands as a testament to his commitment to portraying the life and legacy of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on the silver screen.
