The movie is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy¡¯s 1955 Tamil novel of the same name, which chronicles the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman, one of the most powerful kings in the south, who went on to become the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I.

The film, called by Mani Ratnam as his dream project, will be among the most expensive projects ever undertaken in the country. The film has the best business handling for each of its departments. A. National Award winning art director Thotta Tharani is in charge of production design while Mani Ratnam's trusted editor Sreekar Prasad is the editor.
