Ever since the trailer of Gangubai Kathiawadi has been released, the tinsel town has been going bonkers over the film. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali film has Alia Bhatt playing the lead role of a powerful, controversial and most respected madam of Kathiawadi in the '60s.

Last year, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had made a controversial remark when he said that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi used to meet Karim Lala in Mumbai. This had ruffled a lot of feathers.
Reportedly, Karim Lala had met Indira Gandhi only once when he tagged along with a Padma Bhushan awardee and musician Harindranath Chattopadhyay.
Who was Karim Lala?
Born as Abdul Karim Sher Khan in Afghanistan¡¯s Kunar province, Lala was an underworld don who was infamous for his liquor dens, gambling and extortion rackets from '60s to early '80s.
He was the leader of Pathan Gang that reigned over Mumbai at that time.
What was Karim Lala's connection with Gangubai?
Lala was Gangubai's rakhi brother. It is said that when she was raped, she reached out to him, who in turn thrashed her rapist.
"Lala ko ghar baste hue dekhna pasand hai, ujadte hue nahi," says Ajay Devgn in the trailer of Gangubai Kathiawadi. Devgn who is essaying the role of Lala in the movie goes on to smash a man on the bonnet of his car. You can watch the trailer below.
It is said that Karim Lala's death in 2002 marked the end of the underworld mafia rule Mumbai had witnessed for decades.
